Get Well Kim!!

We got some shocking news yesterday that Kim Kolb, fellow SE and and the author of the Nest Liner section on the SE blog, suffered a stroke after hitting his head this past weekend. The latest news is that he’s been moved out of ICU. You can follow his progress and send well wishes at his blog at Reston Hospital. We wish Kim and his family all the best as he recovers.

Next D.C. United Game

Chivas USA-D.C. United

Saturday, May 17

Home Depot Center Carson, CA

Kick off 10:30 pm ET

Viewing Parties Because kick off is pretty late (OK, maybe not for you club-going hipsters!) we have two places in the Metro D.C. area that are committed to showing the game (show up early and catch the Rapids-Dynamo game at 8:30 so you can get a good seat and settle in for the night, the bars can’t hold seats for hours). Please support the bars that support us by showing up at these away game viewing parties. We STILL need people to help organize parties in Baltimore and Capitol Hill. If you’re interested, please send an email to James at membership@screaming-eagles.com

Tifo Creation Party, May 18

The fine folks who have been painting all those banners that have popped up in the SE Nest lately will be at it again this Sunday, May 18 starting at 1 pm. We need about 20-30 people to help as the goal is to make banners for the upcoming Toronto AND Houston games at this one party. We need ideas and people to paint and construct the banners (you don’t have to be Matisse or Norm Abrams!) Contact Tim at tifo@screaming-eagles.com for directions to his house.

ALSO: The Tifo Crew is looking for old bed sheets (flat and fitted) and pillow cases for future Tifo Projects. Bed sheets and pillow cases NEED TO BE WHITE and CLEAN (PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE IT REALLY NEEDS TO BE CLEAN), we can work around holes but stains, not so much.

Other items: Streamers (black, red and/or white), Confetti (homemade with newspaper preferably), Paint Brushes (the cheapo “chip” brushes are great). Items can be dropped off at an SE tailgate for Tim to pick up.

More Outreach events in June!

Send a Net, Save a Life!

Just days before the Screaming Eagles take to the streets for the annual Race for the Cure, we are co-hosting a Happy Hour at the Rocket Bar on June 5th with the Capital Co-ed Soccer League to raise money for Nothing But Nets. Rocket Bar is located across the street from the Verizon Center (downstairs). The intent is to bring together the adult soccer community in the Washington DC area to raise money for a wonderful organization that works to prevent malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa. Special guests that will be in attendance include members of the Washington Freedom.

Fundraiser for United for D.C.

For all you folks who want to dust off your other kind of cleats and get into the rough, please consider joining one of the teams for D.C. United’s 7th Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament on June 23rd at Old Hickory in Woodbridge to benefit United for D.C. There are a couple of places left as we put together our teams - so please drop a note to Matt Mathai, our Grand Poobah of the Putting Green himself, at segolf@screaming-eagles.com

Screaming Eagles honor Gordon Bradley

A true champion of the sport nationally and a giant in the local soccer community is no longer with us. However, his legacy will always remain, for without his efforts we would not be here to support DC United and the growth of our beloved game. We will miss him!

For those who were unable to attend the memorial service at the George Mason University Center for the Arts, please read Steven Goff’s piece in the Washington Post.

Volunteers on a sunnier day in Anacostia at Anne Beers ElementaryNot only has the team’s play put a damper on things, but our escape from April showers means that we are now being deluged in May. Our Community Outreach team has sadly made the decision that we will have to bow out of the Arlington Neighborhood Parade this year.

The continuing rains have made it impossible to put our float together. Hopefully, we will be able to do it next year even bigger and better!

If you are playing on one of our SEFC teams, please check your league’s weather hotline before heading out only to find your pitch has been flooded out.

So, let us take a moment to thank all those who came out last Saturday for the DC Cares Servathon at Anne Beers Elementary School. I am sure all the hard work brought some rays of sunshine to the kids when they came to school and found a colorful surprise! Click here for pics from a sunnier day.

Couple of quick Outreach notes:

Race for the Cure is less than a month away and you can now sign up for our team

There are plenty more fun events coming up over the next few months, so if you would like to join in our community activities, please do not hesitate to drop us a note at outreach@screaming-eagles.com

Not much to say today after that embarassment. Here’s the blog post I talked about at Booked For Dissent.

Post-game quotes from Soehn, Dyachenko and Payne.

As always, you can download the show (12:19, 11.2 MB) by right-clicking here and selecting “Save Target As…” or by subscribing using the button at the top.

Prior to the start of Thursday night’s match with the Chicago Fire, DC United’s U-18 Academy team will take on their local rivals Potomac on the field at RFK Stadium. This will probably be our only chance to see the U-18s play at RFK all year. The game will be a preparation for United’s participation in the 2008 Clubs Youth World Cup, which will take place in Spain from May 26-June 6, which it earned as the winner of last year’s MLS U-17 Cup.

The team is coached by former United midfielder John Maessner, who also serves as United’s Director of Youth Development. Marco Etcheverry will also be on hand as the Technical Advisor.  The coaching staff of the U-18s also includes former United players Judah Cooks and Josh Gros as assistants.

Gate A will open at 4:30 PM, and kickoff is at 4:45, so if you can make it out to RFK early, come inside and see the United stars of tomorrow!

UPDATE:The U-18 game has been moved from the stadium to United’s Training Fields. If you still want to attend, you can see the location of the fields on the parking map found here
