The Hand Of Schelotto – D.C. Falls To The Crew, 2-0

Maradona is famously remembered for the “Hand of God” goal.  Thierry Henry just caught a lot of flack for a similar incident.  How will Crew supporters remember Saturday’s “Hand of Schelotto” goal?

With many soccer fans still focused on the World Cup in South Africa, the MLS returned to action.  D.C. United traveled to the Columbus Crew and left suddenly feeling a little more sympathetic for the 1986 England national team and 2010 Ireland national team.

A 2-0 loss to the Crew was highlighted, depending on how you view the match, by a Guillermo Barros Schelotto hand ball that turned out to be the match winner.

Showing no early signs of loss from the time off, Chris Pontius tested the Crew goalkeeper, William Hesmer, with shot worthy of diving save.  Pontius was the catalist for a suddenly dangerous attack against the Seattle Sounders when United last suited up.

The 27th minute saw the D.C. defense leave Emilio Renteria acres of space.  The stocky midfielder ripped a shot on goal, only to see it dip just beyond the crossbar.

United had a wonderful chance to take the lead in the 33rd minute.  A goal kick from Troy Perkins was flicked on by Adam Cristman to Pontius, who was streaking down field.  Deep in the box, Pontius cut back to fire a seven-yard shot on goal, but his attempt went high.

Adam Cristman attempted to put D.C. on the board with a tough-long-range flick in the 37th minute, but his shot hit the top of the goal, as he tried to catch Hesmer off his line.

The teams went to halftime scoreless, with United looking the better side.

A 56th-minute sequence put the Crew up and will have the fans talking for quite some time.
