It should come as no surprise that folks inside the Beltway were cheering loudly for the little guy with the big heart staring down the favorites in front of a national television audience.

No, it wasn’t just a case of the football equivalent of David vs. Goliath.

Sure there were those who just hated the thought of Beckham and Donovan turning a failed experiment into a recipe for success.

And there were more than a handful of folks unsettled by the thought of Bruce Arena being the one to close the gap in championship trophies between the two clubs.

But deep down inside, every true DC United fan continues to root for Nick’s success.

After all, he was always a standup guy.

Ready with a genuine ear-to-ear grin and always available to the supporters.

Oh, and he did bring us home a little silverware along the way as well… in surprisingly similar circumstances.
