US Open Cup

DC United v FC Dallas
Wednesday, April 22
RFK Stadium
Kick off 7:30 pm
So, even though D.C. United won the 2008 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup trophy they have to participate in play-in games to qualify for the 2009 tournament (the 6 MLS clubs with the best records at the end of 2008 got automatic bids and the rest of the US teams have to battle it out for the last 2 MLS spots). Yeah, so much for everybody loves a winner! The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is an annual national competition that is open to all amateur and professional soccer teams that are affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest tournament in the U.S., beginning in 1914 when Brooklyn Field Club took home the very first title. MLS teams were first included in the tournament in the inaugural 1996 season, with D.C. United taking home the title.

Tailgate: A limited amount of pizza and beer will be available on Wednesday starting at 4:30 pm. We’ll be closing up at 6:30 pm (or earlier if food and drinks run out). We’ll be in the usual spot in lot 8, look for the SE tent. If you’re going to be late (or REALLY thirsty or hungry) we suggest bringing your own provisions or plan on eating inside. Hopefully Paul remembers that Pizza Hut is an FC Dallas sponsor and uses another pie company!

(you gotta love the useful kitchen tools available at Skymall!!)
Nothing But Nets-Last Chance to Donate (and We’re SO Close!!)
Between the pub crawl this past Saturday on U St. and the tips jars we’ve had out at the past few tailgates we’re just a little shy of $500 for the SE donation to United for D.C.’s Nothing But Nets Challenge. While we won’t catch Seattle FC in the overall total donations collected (those crap weasels have the city of Seattle and the Gates Foundation helping) we are beating out Chicago and LA in their sad fundraising efforts! To get us up (and hopefully a little over) $500 the Nothing But Nets folks will be out at the tailgate taking donations on Wednesday OR you can purchase one of our sexy new black SE T-shirts (proceeds from sales on Wednesday will go towards the Nothing But Nets drive). The new shirts are $15 and are in limited supply so if you want one, stop by the SE membership table.
