If there was one thing you could take away from Kick-Off Shindig ’09, it was definitely that everything about this year is BIGGER!
Sure, the Screaming Eagles as a club has grown by leaps and bounds over the past year, as evidenced by the crowd of supporters that packed Union Jack’s Ballston to hear all the latest and celebrate the upcoming season in style. But what struck me most was the incredible number and scope of the activities that are on tap for the season. Whether it is roadtrips, community outreach or our efforts on gameday it is becoming hard to keep them all straight.
Heck, I saw sign-ups floating around for a bevy of things to fill the calendar in the coming months. This month alone includes these outreach efforts:
- The 4th Annual Dodging Diabetes Charity Dodgeball Tournament
- SE table at the 7th Annual Kick-Off Luncheon
- Shamrockfest

Even the team has gotten into the act!
That was apparent by the details that Tom Soehn and Dave Kasper laid out in terms of the changes afoot for our defense. Dejan Jakovic, our new signing from Red Star Belgrade, is not exactly a dwarf by any stretch of the imagination but he will be looking up at Anthony Peters if they end up on the field at the same time! If the team adds Milos Kocic to the squad to back up Crayton in the nets, we will now be able to truly call the club ‘massive’.
As Steve Goff points out our central defense is not exactly puny:
Jakovic (age 23): 6 feet 2, 178 pounds
Peters (25): 6 feet 5, 205 pounds
Devon McTavish (24): 6 feet, 170 pounds
Greg Janicki (24): 6 feet 3, 190 poundsIn case of emergency, left back Marc Burch (24 years old; 6 feet 1 and 185 pounds) is also available.
They are young. They are big. Now let’s see if they can play together.
