The Screaming Eagles have not waited to begin our outreach efforts in the community that will host our new stadium.
We have begun by donating Major League Soccer replica balls to Thurgood Marshall Middle School’s nascent soccer program.
As it so happens Jimi Butler, our roadtrip director, teaches at the school located in Temple Hills, Maryland.
Thurgood Marshall has a population of nearly 700 students in the sixth through eighth grades, many of whom come from tough economic circumstances. Most of the children have never played soccer and do not have a high level of interest in the sport.
Jimi has taken on the challenge to be the head coach for the boy’s team this year.
Practice officially starts on March 23rd and the first match is on April 15th, 2009.
I am allowed to start running intramural soccer as soon as I want. As quickly as possible I would like to get this program started as it is going to be a learning process for myself and the players. I have never played organized soccer and have no clue as to how to even begin to coach a team. My interest was in trying to promote the sport at the school and impart my passion for the game to kids.
