From the Prez: DC’s playoff chances/Roadtrip to Columbus
Oct 21st, 2008 by Kim
Fellow Screaming Eagles,
There’s only one game left in the MLS regular season, and last week’s 0-0 draw in Houston and thrilling 2-1 win over New England means that there’s still hope for United to make the playoffs. We need some help, but there’s a decent chance that Sunday’s game in Columbus is going to mean something.
So, I want to announce that we are taking signups RIGHT NOW for a provisional caravan van trip to Columbus. We have reserved a fleet of vans and, if the game means anything for DC, we’ll be hitting the road all together at 7:30 AM on Sunday to support the boys. Cost will be around $40 per person including the match ticket, and we’ll be getting back to DC around 3 AM. Send an e-mail to me personally at paul@screaming-eagles.com to sign up.
Don’t pay us yet though! If you sign up and we go, of course you’re on the hook to pay. But the great thing about this trip is that if the game means nothing, we won’t go, and you won’t be out a dime.
We had planned a bus trip for this match, but it would have cost around $100 per person and anyone who signed up for the trip would have had to pay up front. I didn’t want to do that to you if the game meant nothing. This way, the trip is a lot cheaper AND there’s no risk of paying for and traveling to a meaningless match.
We’ll let you know about pickup points. We’ll probably have one stop in the Arlington area and one stop up I-270 in Montgomery County. Be aware that this trip is going to both start too early and return too late to be particularly Metro-friendly.
PLEASE sign up in advance if you’re going to want to go on this trip. Its possible that we won’t know definitively until Saturday at 11:30 PM whether this trip will happen, and because of the lateness of that hour we really aren’t going to be able to take signups at that point.
If you’re willing to drive for half the trip (its 14 hours roundtrip), please let me know. You’d have to stay sober, but, in return for that, the trip will only cost you $5.
Here are the playoff scenarios:
1. New York wins on Thursday, Kansas City wins on Saturday: DC can’t make the playoffs. This is the ONLY scenario under which a roadtrip to Columbus won’t happen.
2. Either KC or New York lose: If DC wins in Columbus, we’re playoff-bound.
3. KC ties and New York wins: DC needs to beat Columbus by 3 goals or more to advance
4. New York ties and KC wins OR both KC and NY tie: DC needs to beat Columbus by 4 goals or more to advance.
I sincerely hope to see all of you bright and early on Sunday morning!
-Paul
