During half-time of the DC United – Chicago Fire grudge match there was a presentation on the field that was undoubtedly far more important than the results of the game itself. MLS Sponsor Makita presented the Nothing But Nets charity a whopping $100,000 check for its campaign to eliminate the scourge of Malaria from Africa. Read Shannon Raybold’s first-person account of her experience with Ben Olsen and the kids on the field.
For those of you who are not aware, Malaria kills over one million kids a year. For each $10 donation, a net can be purchased that may help save a life. How is this possible? Well, In the poorest parts of the world, where effective window screens are lacking, insecticide-treated bed nets are arguably the most cost-effective way to prevent malaria transmission. One bed net costs just $10 to buy and deliver to individuals in need. One bed net can safely last a family for about four years, thanks to a long-lasting insecticide woven into the net fabric.
Soccer fans can also join in the campaign by coming out to a fundraising Happy Hour sponsored by the Capital Coed Soccer League and the Screaming Eagles at the Rocket Bar on Thursday night.
